The story, neutrally told

Saudi Arabia is providing Yemen's internationally recognised government with more than 224 million riyals (about $60 million) in budget support, Saudi ambassador Mohammed Al Jabir said on X on Thursday 1 October 2026. The ambassador said the money was provided at the request of the Yemeni government and aims to keep government funds flowing, improve fiscal policy and raise Yemenis' purchasing power. Al Jabir described the support as part of the kingdom's ongoing aid to Yemenis amid what he called "terrorist attacks" by the Houthi militia on Yemeni resources, assets and interests. Reuters, carried by Arab News, adds that the grant was channelled through the Saudi Development and Reconstruction Program for Yemen.

The funding comes as hostilities escalate between Saudi Arabia and the Iran-aligned Houthis, who have attacked Saudi cities and energy sites. The National reports that government forces fought Houthi fighters on several fronts in Taiz governorate on Thursday, according to the state-run Saba news agency citing a military source; the Houthi side's account of those clashes is not given. The National adds that the Houthi-run health ministry said seven people were killed and 40 injured in a strike on a market at the Mawiya junction in Taiz province on Sunday, while the government said it had targeted a Houthi military camp and vehicles there.

The National places the aid against wider background: the Houthis hold Sanaa and much of the north, their attacks add to pressure on global oil supplies during the US-Israeli war on Iran, and a 2022 UN-brokered truce that reduced fighting gave way to open hostilities this summer. It cites UN data from March that 22 million people in Yemen need humanitarian assistance.
