The story, neutrally told

Dennis Haskins, best known as Principal Richard Belding in 'Saved by the Bell', has died aged 75. His agent, Jay Schachter, confirmed the death, calling it "a tragic loss" and saying Haskins loved his fans. Outlets differ on timing: Breitbart says the statement was made on Monday, while The Independent says Tuesday.

No cause of death was released by the agent. TVLine and Rolling Stone quote a tribute on the Instagram page of the closed Los Angeles karaoke bar Dimples, which Rolling Stone attributes to his friend and longtime caretaker Kimberly Snow; it says he became ill about eight years ago, kept his Parkinson's private, and died "late last night". TVLine says the news was first reported by ABC News Channel 9 in Chattanooga, where he was born in 1950.

Haskins first played Belding on 'Good Morning, Miss Bliss', which was reworked into 'Saved by the Bell', and returned to the role in 'Saved by the Bell: The New Class'. His other credits included 'The Dukes of Hazzard', 'Mad Men', 'New Girl' and 'It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia'. Fox News, The Independent and the Daily Mail say he is survived by his son, Dustin.

Later in the day, TVLine, Rolling Stone and the Daily Mail reported tributes from co-stars including Mario Lopez and Tiffani Thiessen.
