The story, neutrally told

EastEnders actor Shane Richie was banned from driving for six months after admitting a speeding offence. The ban was imposed on 23 September at Guildford Magistrates' Court, with a £500 fine and £320 in costs and a surcharge. The Evening Standard and Daily Mirror break the £320 down as £120 in costs and a £200 victim surcharge, and name the magistrate as Sheila Hewitt.

Richie pleaded guilty in writing, and the case was dealt with in private under the Single Justice Procedure. He was caught on camera driving a Ford at 35mph on Reigate Hill, a 30mph road, on 15 March; the Standard gives the time as 9.16am. In a note to the court, Richie said he has been followed by photographers because he is going through a "very public" divorce, and that the press had been "constantly baiting me".

He said this was "not an excuse" but a reason he may have sped up. The Standard and Mirror note that court records do not show how many penalty points he already had or whether he could argue against disqualification. Richie is separately accused of drink-driving in Harlow, Essex, on 29 July, allegedly giving a breath sample of 65 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath against a legal limit of 35.

He denies that allegation and is due to stand trial at Colchester Magistrates' Court on 17 November 2027.
