The story, neutrally told

Centre · 1Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, has directed the development of a tower and recreational park exclusively for women in Kalba. Centre · 1The National reports the tower as a clock tower, to be built near Kalba University opposite the existing clock tower, and says construction is under way, according to the emirate's media office. Centre · 1Gulf News says the project is meant to give women greater privacy, comfort and leisure facilities, as an alternative to the existing Clock Tower landmark, which attracts large crowds of both genders.

Centre · 1Speaking on the radio and television phone-in programme Direct Line, the Ruler said the existing clock tower is for men and the second is being built primarily for women at the opposite end of the university grounds. Centre · 1The National says the site was chosen to be far enough from nearby homes to preserve residents' privacy, with the university to the west and the cooperative society, Kalba Creek and the island to the east. Centre · 2A park will be built next to the tower, including a large, air-conditioned indoor hall with games; the Ruler called it the first of its kind in Kalba and a gift to its residents, and said similar parks are planned for other areas.

Centre · 1The existing clock tower, at the junction of Al Wahda Street and Al Corniche Street, was inaugurated by the Ruler on 17 March 2022; it is 60 metres tall with seven floors, two observation decks and a restaurant. Centre · 1The National says the announcement did not specify the new tower's architectural features, facilities or opening date. Centre · 1The Ruler also approved an integrated care complex for men and women on Khorfakkan Road, with two nursing homes, physiotherapy facilities, two counselling centres, two childcare homes, a women's protection centre, a community centre and 390 parking spaces, plus gardens, a mosque and an event square.
