The story, neutrally told

India beat West Indies by eight wickets in the second ODI in Guwahati on Wednesday, finishing the chase with 39 balls to spare. Shubman Gill finished unbeaten on 223 off 133 balls and reached 200 in 117 balls, the fastest double century in ODI history. Gulf News says he beat Ishan Kishan's 126-ball double ton against Bangladesh in 2022.

His first ODI double century was 208 against New Zealand in Hyderabad on 18 January 2023, a gap of 1,351 days according to Gulf News. Rohit Sharma scored a 72-ball century and passed 12,000 ODI runs in a 255-run opening stand with Gill, before Jayden Seales dismissed him for 101. West Indies had posted 405/7, their first 400-plus ODI total, with centuries from John Campbell (101), Shai Hope (104) and Amir Jangoo (114).

Reuters and ABC call the chase the second-highest successful one in ODI history; Gulf News says India became the second team to chase 400 or more, and gives the target as 406. Gill said chasing 400 is never easy and that he was proud to stay unbeaten; Gulf News adds that he battled cramps. Gulf News says India have won the three-match series after taking the opener in Thiruvananthapuram; the third ODI is on 3 October in New Chandigarh.
