The story, neutrally told

Left · 2Skydance is offering certain employees a one-time voluntary buyout (VBO) as it integrates the businesses of Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery, according to a memo sent to staff on Monday, Oct. 26. Left · 1The memo came from chairman and CEO David Ellison and co-CEO Ynon Kreiz. It says that "not everyone will see their future here", and that those who qualify will get an individual communication with personalized details and terms, plus a window to decide. Left · 2The memo also adopts a mandatory five-day-per-week in-office policy across all of Skydance. Ellison and Kreiz said in-person collaboration is vital to the company's culture and that they had seen the benefits at Paramount.

Left · 2The rollout will be phased by location, with what the memo calls ample notice before changes take effect. The memo acknowledges that many employees are already in the office five days a week but that the change may be significant for others. Left · 1The Hollywood Reporter framed the buyout as an option for employees who may not want to proceed with the office shift. Left · 1Paramount's $111 billion takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery closed on Oct. 6. In their "Day One" memo that day, Ellison and Kreiz acknowledged that layoffs would be part of the process. Kreiz, formerly CEO of Mattel, joined the new Skydance earlier this month.

Left · 1Skydance executives have said they aim for more than $6 billion in annualized cost savings within three years, and part of that will come from layoffs. The company has not said how many jobs it expects to cut. Left · 1The Hollywood Reporter reported that Kreiz and Skydance board member Gerry Cardinale have said they don't expect most of the savings to come from staff reductions. They expect technology and marketing changes to deliver it instead. Left · 2Variety cited an August Los Angeles County report saying the merger could cost some 4,500 film and TV jobs over three years in Los Angeles alone. The Hollywood Reporter noted that Kreiz launched a wholesale reorganization of Mattel after joining it.

Every sentence links to the reporting it rests on. The pill in front of each says where its sources sit: Left, Centre or Right when one side supplies at least half of them, Mixed when they are evenly split. The number is how many outlets it cites.

Framing
Both trade outlets report the memo straight and publish it in full. Variety leads with the buyouts coming ahead of layoffs and the scale of potential job losses. The Hollywood Reporter treats the buyout as the start of cost-cutting and stresses that most savings are not expected to come from staff cuts.
Emphasis
Variety: the lack of disclosed layoff numbers and the LA County estimate of 4,500 lost jobs. The Hollywood Reporter: the return-to-office alignment and the technology and marketing route to savings.
Leaves out or plays down
Neither gives buyout terms, eligibility, the number of employees affected or the response of employees or unions. Variety omits executives' statements that most savings won't come from headcount, and The Hollywood Reporter omits the LA County job-loss estimate.
Charged language
“kick-starting what is widely expected to be the first of many cost-savings efforts”
For example
“The company has not revealed at this point the extent of the job cuts it expects.” — Variety
“Instead, they expect technology and marketing changes to help them achieve those cost reductions.” — The Hollywood Reporter
