The story, neutrally told

Mixed · 2Sotheby's will hold its first fine art auction in Abu Dhabi in December, as the main addition to the second edition of its Collectors' Week. Mixed · 2The fine art sale, titled Breaking Ground, takes place on 10 December. It is one of six auctions spanning fine art, jewellery, watches, handbags, collectible cars and high-performance bicycles. Centre · 1According to The National, all six sales will be held at the new Saadiyat Grove Experience Centre on Saadiyat Island. The luxury categories are sold on 9 December and fine art follows the next day.

Mixed · 2Highlights include Andy Warhol's 1985 Ads portfolio and a drawing by Christo of the Abu Dhabi Mastaba, a proposed permanent artwork in the Liwa desert. The National also lists Claude Monet's Prunes et Abricots, painted between 1882 and 1885. Mixed · 2The sale has a focus on pioneering Emirati artists and women artists. Works by Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim, Hassan Sharif, Najat Makki, Huguette Caland, Etel Adnan and Fahrelnissa Zeid are included, and Nujoom Al-Ghanem and Nasser Al-Yousif will make their auction debuts. Mixed · 2The luxury sales include about 50 watches from the single-owner Shapes of Cartier collection, among them a rare Twin Strap from around 1970. Jewellery includes a Fancy Brown-Orange diamond of more than 40 carats, and the car sale includes a 2009 Ferrari Scuderia Spider 16M and a 2004 360 Challenge Stradale.

Mixed · 2Public exhibitions, panel discussions and masterclasses will precede the auctions. Sotheby's will release further lot details in November, and the announcement did not include exhibition dates or visiting hours. Centre · 1Katia Boueiz, head of Sotheby's UAE and chairman, Middle East, told The National that last year's fine art exhibition, whose works were not for sale, drew queues and shaped planning for this edition. She said the ambition is to help embed Abu Dhabi more deeply in the international art market, and she expects the format of Collectors' Week to evolve. Mixed · 2The sale comes in a busy season for Abu Dhabi's art scene. The National cites Christie's first Abu Dhabi fine art auction on 1 November, the inaugural Frieze Abu Dhabi from 19 to 22 November, and the opening of Guggenheim Abu Dhabi on 11 December.
