The story, neutrally told

Mixed · 2Lars Klingbeil, German finance minister, vice chancellor and co-leader of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), said on Monday 12 October 2026 that the party will hold a federal party conference in December or January. Mixed · 2Klingbeil said it would be "not a convention but a full federal party conference", where the entire SPD leadership team will stand for election and a party leadership will be chosen. Centre · 1Anadolu Agency reported that Klingbeil spoke after a meeting of the party's executive committee, which had unanimously backed the proposal. Klingbeil said the vote was important to establish clarity on both the leadership's composition and the SPD's policy direction.

Mixed · 2The announcement follows the resignation of Bärbel Bas as labour and social affairs minister and SPD co-chair; Anadolu says it took effect immediately. Mixed · 2Reuters said Bas had faced increasing "public attacks", including from the CDU/CSU conservative bloc, the SPD's coalition partner. Anadolu said Bas also cited the death of a stepdaughter and heightened public criticism, including from within the governing coalition. Mixed · 2Klingbeil said Germany needs a culture of mutual respect in politics: "We are competitors, and we need a culture of debate. But we also need a culture of mutual respect." Anadolu reported that Klingbeil expressed deep sadness over Bas's decision and said Klingbeil could understand it personally.

Centre · 1Anadolu placed the move in the context of ongoing CDU/CSU–SPD negotiations on social and labour reforms amid declining public support. It said last month's state elections in Berlin, Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern were historic setbacks for both coalition partners, and that recent polls put the AfD at around 28-30%, the CDU/CSU at 19-21% and the SPD at about 13%.

Every sentence links to the reporting it rests on. The pill in front of each says where its sources sit: Left, Centre or Right when one side supplies at least half of them, Mixed when they are evenly split. The number is how many outlets it cites.
