The story, neutrally told

Mixed · 2Spotify announced on Wednesday 7 October 2026 that it is expanding audiobook access to more than 180 markets worldwide, with the rollout starting immediately. Mixed · 2The rollout covers regions across Europe, the Americas, the Caribbean, the Middle East, Africa and Asia and will continue over the coming months; the Hollywood Reporter says it runs through the end of 2026. Centre · 1Until now, audiobooks were available mainly in English-speaking markets such as the U.S., U.K., Ireland, Australia and New Zealand, plus Germany.

Mixed · 2The expansion adds catalogues in Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Polish and other languages, bringing the total to more than 120 languages. TechCrunch reports more than 350,000 titles for the new markets, including over 45,000 Spanish-language titles in Spain. Left · 1The Hollywood Reporter says the overall catalogue holds more than 800,000 titles, and that the announcement was made at the Frankfort Book Fair. Centre · 1Spotify is working with more than 300 publishers worldwide, including Planeta and Mondadori, to increase available titles.

Centre · 1Premium subscribers in eligible countries such as Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Poland, Chile, Norway and Peru get 12 hours of audiobook listening. Anyone can buy the Audiobook+ standalone plan with a 15-hour allowance, or buy individual titles. An Audiobook+ add-on for student plans is due in select regions in November. Mixed · 2Spotify says Audiobooks+ has more than one million subscribers and more than $100 million in annual recurring revenue; over the past year monthly audiobook listeners grew by about 40% and listening hours by more than 30%. The Hollywood Reporter notes Spotify has not disclosed full financials for the segment. Mixed · 2TechCrunch frames the move as helping Spotify, with more than 750 million users, compete with music streamers and audiobook apps like Audible; the Hollywood Reporter frames it as part of a push beyond music and podcasts into new segments, including fitness and AI, to increase stickiness.

Centre · 1Other recent audiobook initiatives include the Page Match feature launched in February, Audiobook Charts, an AI tool using ElevenLabs models for authors to turn books into audiobooks, and experimental physical book sales in markets such as the U.S. and U.K. Left · 1Owen Smith, Spotify's VP of Audiobooks, said the expansion means millions more people can discover audiobooks and that authors and publishers can reach readers they have never reached before.
