The story, neutrally told

Centre · 2Author Stephen King wrote on X on October 8 that he did not understand why the Paramount+ series "Landman" had not been nominated for Emmy awards. Centre · 2King singled out Billy Bob Thornton's lead performance (as Tommy Norris) and director Stephen Kay, and asked: "Is it politics, or what?" Centre · 1TVLine reports that none of Taylor Sheridan's TV shows has received an above-the-line nomination: "Lioness" and "Tulsa King" got nods for stunts and "Yellowstone" for production design.

Centre · 1TVLine adds that Thornton received Critics Choice and Golden Globe nominations for "Landman", and that the show has drawn a fair amount of critical acclaim. Centre · 2Both outlets note speculation about the reasons: Screen Rant says it has been argued, even by Thornton, that the omission is partly political, since Sheridan's scripts tend to mock major cities like New York and Los Angeles and frame conflicts in a right-versus-left context; TVLine cites the work's conservative-leaning politics and Paramount+'s lower standing among streamers, while saying we may never know for certain. Centre · 1Screen Rant adds that some Emmy voters reportedly do not watch many shows and nominate familiar names and buzzy series, and that the cast, including Demi Moore, Sam Elliott, Jon Hamm and Andy Garcia, is the kind the Emmys usually nominate.

Centre · 1Screen Rant says King's followers reacted in a split way: some who had seen the show agreed, while others felt its story drops off after one season. Centre · 2Sheridan has said he is not chasing Emmys; on The Bill Simmons Podcast he said "You're not going to win no Emmys with me, but I'm not trying to win Emmys." Centre · 2"Landman" season 3 is currently filming, and TVLine says Sheridan is set to leave Paramount+ for NBCUniversal at the beginning of 2029.
