The story, neutrally told

Centre · 2Ethan King, grandson of author Stephen King, has joined the writing staff of season 2 of HBO's IT: Welcome to Derry, according to showrunner Brad Caleb Kane. Centre · 2The news came from an interview Kane gave Radio Times, which Collider says revealed it exclusively; Screen Rant says the interview was for Kane's new horror series Crystal Lake. Centre · 2Kane praised the writer as "brilliant and really smart" and "a chip off the old block", adding that the talent is "definitely passed down genetically through generations."

Centre · 1Screen Rant notes that Ethan King has no major published works, so the show would be a writing debut, and speculates they may start in a story editor or additional material role; the outlet gives this as its own conjecture, not something Kane said. Centre · 1Screen Rant adds that Stephen King's sons Owen and Joe King (who writes as Joe Hill) are both professional writers. Centre · 1HBO renewed the series in August, and Collider reports that season 2 is not expected to debut until likely around mid-2027.

Centre · 1Season 2 moves to 1935 and the Great Depression, with Kane as sole showrunner; Kane has said it will still focus on child protagonists and lean towards a "Warner Bros. gangster picture" feel. Centre · 1Co-creator Andy Muschietti has said the season will carry a tonal shift, with "depression-era hustling" and the era's social and cultural ills at its heart. Centre · 2Season 1, set in 1962, drew 5.7 million cross-platform viewers within three days of its premiere and 6.5 million for its finale, according to Collider.
