Republican Steve Hilton, a British-born former Fox News host, faces Democrat Xavier Becerra in a CNN debate on Wednesday night at 6 p.m. PT in the California governor's race. The Guardian says Hilton trails Becerra by 20 percentage points or more in polls, while Deadline also describes him as behind. Hilton won close to 25% of the primary vote in June and, the Guardian reports, needs another 25% in the general election, which it calls daunting. He said: "Of course I'm the underdog."

In Deadline's interview, Hilton called a federal film and TV tax credit "very unlikely" to pass this year, mainly because of the calendar, and said California cannot rely on Washington. He said he would uncap California's film incentives and that California only needs to "match the best" to win productions. Hilton called Attorney General Rob Bonta's antitrust case against the Paramount–Warner Bros. Discovery merger "entirely political driven", while saying he has not weighed in on the merger itself.

The Guardian lists his proposals: abolishing the DMV, $3 gas, a California version of Doge, and scrapping the high-speed rail project. The Guardian says he balances Trump-supporting base voters against wider appeal, having won Trump's endorsement but not wanting Trump to campaign for him.
