The story, neutrally told

Riot police in Chile clashed with student protesters in central Santiago on Thursday 1 October during demonstrations against expected cuts to public education funding in President José Antonio Kast's proposed 2027 budget. The protests came a day after Kast presented his administration's initial budget proposal. Anadolu Agency reported that major student unions organised the marches and that thousands took to the streets, while Al Jazeera described the crowd as hundreds of students.

According to Anadolu, demonstrators gathered at Plaza Italia and marched down La Alameda toward the La Moneda presidential palace. About 800 metres into the route, the national police blocked the march and fired water cannons and tear gas. Some protesters responded by throwing stones, bottles and wooden sticks. The Undersecretary of the Interior told a press briefing that at least 17 people had been arrested. Near the main campus of the Pontifical Catholic University (UC), a small group of masked protesters attacked a counter-demonstration by pro-government student groups, who displayed a banner reading "We do not want a paralyzed Chile; we want a Chile that prospers." Kast later condemned the violence against students aligned with his political movement.

Kast, a conservative who took office in March on an austerity platform, pledged on Wednesday to protect free higher education for more than 600,000 students, backing away from earlier discussions of restricting the programme. Student leaders argue that broader funding for the sector remains severely at risk. The government has not yet released the full text of the 2027 fiscal package. Anadolu, citing leaked details reported by local media, said the Education Ministry's draft includes significant rollbacks, including reduced direct funding for state universities. Student organisations signalled that further mobilisations will follow once the full budget bill enters Congress for debate.
