The story, neutrally told

A tanker was hit by an unknown projectile while transiting the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday 1 October, causing a fire on board, according to the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO). UKMTO said it received a third-party report of the incident at 1750 GMT. The crew were reported safe, but the extent of the damage, and any environmental impact, was not yet known.

Earlier, Iran's semi-official Fars News Agency, citing local sources, reported that a supertanker with a capacity of 2.5 million barrels had been hit about 8 kilometres (5 miles) off the Omani coast and was on fire. Anadolu noted that no details were available on the vessel, the cause or possible casualties; UKMTO did not give the tanker's flag or planned route, or say whether it carried crude or liquefied natural gas (LNG), according to AFP. The coverage does not say who fired the projectile, and none of it reports a claim of responsibility.

AFP described the strait as still at the heart of the conflict that followed US and Israeli strikes on Iran in late February: it said Tehran has been blocking commercial shipping and firing on vessels it accuses of unauthorized crossings, and Washington has responded with a counterblockade of Iranian ports. AFP added that the United States has not launched strikes on Iranian targets since 1 September, although ships are still regularly targeted in the strait.
