The story, neutrally told

Elijah Hemingway, 32, who is accused of killing a Pittsburgh pediatrician, has been charged with a separate sexual assault that police say happened hours before the killing. The Allegheny County Police Department said in a Facebook post that Hemingway ambushed the woman as she walked along a path connecting to an alley in Wilkinsburg, and stole her cell phone. Authorities said the woman did not know Hemingway, and that detectives recovered multiple items linking him to the assault along with her stolen phone.

After consulting the district attorney's office, county police filed additional charges including rape, sexual assault and robbery. Dr. Idris Evans, 46, was stabbed in his home in Edgewood, Pennsylvania, while he and his wife slept, and was pronounced dead at a hospital; his wife was critically injured. According to the police report, Evans' wife said the attacker appeared "psychotic", claimed to be "God", and that Evans called him "Elijah" as if he knew him; she said she did not know the suspect, and county authorities could not confirm any prior relationship.

Hemingway told police that Evans had invited him to the home and attacked him with a knife, but police said they found no stab wound on his back and could not locate the bicycle he said he rode there. He faces seven charges over the home attack, including criminal homicide, aggravated assault and burglary, and court records show he has a criminal history dating to 2016 and was released without bail in July in connection with a February burglary. The reports' day references are inconsistent: they place the assault on "Wednesday morning" and the home attack early "Thursday", while also calling it a midnight attack, so exact times remain unclear from this coverage.
