The story, neutrally told

Syrian authorities announced on Tuesday that they had dismantled a cell they said was linked to Hezbollah in the Yarmouk basin of western Daraa province, near the Israeli-held Golan Heights. According to the state news agency Sana, as reported by The National, three men were arrested and rocket launchers were "completely dismantled"; the agency gave only their initials and no nationalities. Authorities said the cell was preparing rocket launch platforms to carry out attacks, without specifying a target.

The Media Line, citing its Damascus correspondent, said the General Intelligence Service acted with Internal Security Forces, and that the cell's activities and the number detained had not been disclosed. On Wednesday Hezbollah's media office denied any connection to the alleged cell and said it has no presence on Syrian territory. Hezbollah accused Israel of seeking to disrupt ties between Lebanon and Syria and urged Damascus to identify the "real beneficiary" of tensions.

The area has seen repeated Israeli incursions; The Media Line lists September activity around Wadi al-Ruqqad, Jamla and Ma’ariya. Damascus has announced other allegedly Hezbollah-linked cells before, including in May, and Hezbollah has denied such accusations. The National says Hezbollah used the basin as a launch pad after the 2023 Gaza war before withdrawing most forces from Syria by the end of 2024, and that the US has supervised Israel-Syria talks.

Arab News adds that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had said earlier on Tuesday there were "indications" enemies could attack ahead of late-October elections.
