The story, neutrally told

A 61-year-old female teacher was stabbed to death at an elementary school in Staskov, in northwestern Slovakia, on Tuesday 29 September. Two other people were seriously injured: a pupil in critical condition and a second female teacher. Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj Eštok said the second teacher, who was stabbed in the chest, was not in danger of dying.

Police detained a 13-year-old suspect and said the situation was under control. The organised crime unit UBOK is investigating the case as premeditated murder, and no motive has been announced. Interior Minister Šutaj Eštok praised the head teacher for following procedures, saying this stopped the tragedy from becoming worse.

Prime Minister Robert Fico offered condolences and said he was following events with great concern. President Peter Pellegrini called the attack a warning to society and urged more calm and respect. In remarks quoted by Al Jazeera, Pellegrini blamed an atmosphere of intolerance spread by social media and by some politicians.

Both outlets note earlier Slovak school attacks, including a fatal stabbing at a high school in the north in 2025, an attack in Vrutky in 2020 and one in Novaky in 2022.
