The story, neutrally told

Tesco has launched a promotion giving customers a coupon for 8p off a litre of diesel or unleaded when they spend £60 in a single in-store transaction. The coupon can be used at Tesco forecourts in Great Britain and Northern Ireland until Sunday 25 October. The Express adds that no Clubcard is needed, the maximum saving is £8, and the offer is limited to one spend and excludes the Isle of Man and Channel Islands.

The offer comes as diesel prices hit a record: the RAC put the average at 199.18p a litre on Monday, 56.8p above the level when the US-Iran war began on 28 February. The Mirror attributes the rise to the Middle East war pushing up oil costs and affecting refineries, and says motorway services typically charge almost 217p a litre, according to the RAC. Chancellor John Healey told ITV News he was concerned, pointing to the Fuel Finder tool and a freeze on diesel duty rises until the end of the year; any extension of the 5p fuel duty cut will be decided in the Budget on 28 October.

The RAC's Simon Williams said only a sustained lower oil price over several weeks would bring cheaper pump prices, and warned costs would be passed on to consumers. The Mirror also reports supply worries: the Fawley refinery is shut for up to 10 weeks, and Donald Trump is reportedly weighing a ban on US diesel exports, including to the UK. It cites Sky analysis that Britain holds about 40 days of diesel reserves.
