The story, neutrally told

Hulu has a TV series based on the 2020 film The Kid Detective in development, according to a Variety exclusive. Evan Morgan, who wrote and directed the original film, will be an executive producer. Alex Berger will write and executive produce; Collider adds that Rachel Kaplan is also an executive producer.

The A.V. Club lists Berger's producer credits as The Mentalist, Blindspot, Quantum Leap and CIA. The logline reads: a missing persons case reopens the childhood murder he never solved, and a washed-up former kid detective gets one last shot at proving his best days aren't behind him. The film starred Adam Brody as Abe Applebaum, a former child detective; Variety reportedly says Brody is not involved in the series, at least for now.

The A.V. Club says it is unclear whether the series will retell the film's story or use it as a jumping-off point. Collider says the film drew a positive response, with an 85% Certified Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes, and notes it was based on the Encyclopedia Brown books.
