The story, neutrally told

Left · 2Tilda Swinton is to publish her debut memoir, Material Evidence, through Farrar, Straus and Giroux (FSG), according to a post on the publisher's Instagram account on Thursday 1 October. Left · 2The Hollywood Reporter and the A.V. Club's headline summary give the release as fall 2028, though the body of the A.V. Club article says "next year". Left · 2The publisher says the book will not follow a chronological order from childhood to the present, and will proceed object by object: a christening dress, a letter, a wooden leg, a sweatshirt, a length of embroidery silk and a photograph.

Left · 2Swinton called it "a book about curiosity" and "a trail of breadcrumbs through the forest", and said she hopes readers will feel "affirmed and recharged with energy" by the end. Left · 1FSG president Mitzi Angel said she has "long admired Tilda Swinton's unique way of seeing things" and called the book "extraordinarily unusual and moving", full of "humor, insight and appreciation for detail". Left · 2It is Swinton's second published book; her first, the art book Tilda Swinton: Ongoing on her career, fashion and collaborations, was published by Rizzoli in September 2025.

Left · 1At the Berlin International Film Festival in February 2025, Swinton said she was entering a period of doing "something different" after a 40-year film career, and was not shooting a film for the rest of that year.

Every sentence links to the reporting it rests on. The pill in front of each says where its sources sit: Left, Centre or Right when one side supplies at least half of them, Mixed when they are evenly split. The number is how many outlets it cites.

Framing
Both outlets present the memoir as an unconventional, fitting project for Swinton, built around the publisher's Instagram announcement. The Hollywood Reporter is a straightforward announcement with background; the A.V. Club adds admiring commentary.
Emphasis
The object-based, non-chronological structure and Swinton's own words about curiosity; the A.V. Club also stresses her eclectic career.
Leaves out or plays down
Neither gives a price, exact publication date or detail beyond the publisher's statement; the A.V. Club omits Mitzi Angel's comments and the Berlin remarks.
Charged language
“typically unconventional”“absurdly accomplished”“chameleonic”“enchanting”
For example
“Unlike many memoirs, Material Evidence will not follow a chronological format.” — The Hollywood Reporter
“With the absurdly accomplished Swinton having held audiences in rapt wonder” — The A.V. Club
