The story, neutrally told

A toddler pulled a loaded, holstered handgun out of a backpack at a daycare in Canton, Michigan, on Monday, police said. No one was injured, and a parent was taken into custody. Police Chief Joseph Bialy said he had watched video of the toddler taking the gun from the backpack, and called it "shocking to see".

Bialy praised daycare staff for removing the gun quickly and keeping the children safe. One parent is a police officer in a neighbouring jurisdiction, and Bialy said he did not believe the gun was a service weapon, though BNO News reported he could not confirm that. The two outlets differ on who was detained: BNO News says the officer parent was taken into custody, while NBC News says the officer was not the parent in custody.

NBC News reported that no criminal charges had been filed by Tuesday afternoon, and that the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office was reviewing a warrant request. BNO News said detectives were working with the prosecutor's office, and that WJBK reported the other parent is also under investigation. Bialy said he saw no ill intent and stressed safe storage of firearms. How the gun ended up in the backpack remains unclear.

NBC News, citing WDIV, added that the family was dis-enrolled and that the daycare will start searching backpacks.
