The story, neutrally told

Focus Features released the first trailer for Elsinore on Monday 28 September. Andrew Scott stars as Ian Charleson, the Chariots of Fire actor who in 1989 fought to play Hamlet at the National Theatre while dealing with complications from HIV. The A.V. Club says Charleson took the part after Daniel Day-Lewis abruptly left the production.

The official synopsis calls it the story of a gifted actor "whose greatest challenge becomes his greatest triumph". The film debuted at Telluride and then screened at the Toronto International Film Festival. IndieWire reports that Scott has played Hamlet more than any other character and said it was hard to set aside his own interpretation to portray Charleson.

The cast includes Olivia Colman, Billie Piper, Johnny Flynn, Luke Thompson, David Dawson, Matthew Beard and Joe Locke. Focus Features will release it in theaters on 20 November. Both outlets describe Scott's performance as widely praised, with IndieWire saying many see it as a contending role.
