Trump launches AI-powered America.gov; some answers contradict his claims

President Trump launched America.gov, an AI chatbot site meant as one entry point to federal services, and signed an order for agencies to integrate with it. Coverage differs on its promise, its unfinished features and answers that contradict some of his statements.

The story, neutrally told

President Donald Trump launched America.gov on Tuesday 29 September at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in Washington, an AI-powered site meant to help people find federal information and services. He also signed an executive order directing federal agencies to integrate their public-facing services with the site. Trump promised "one front door for every single question" and said it would save people hundreds of hours of paperwork.

For now the site mainly answers questions and points users to other sites. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that from next year Americans will be able to apply for a first passport entirely online. Chief design officer Joe Gebbia said the site runs on Google's Gemini and xAI's Grok; Google confirmed only that it is a partner and that Gemini is involved. Tests by the Associated Press, Newsweek and Al Jazeera found the chatbot saying Joe Biden won the 2020 election, and that officials found no widespread fraud that changed the result.

The New York Times reported it also fact-checks Trump on tariffs, immigration and prices, and that Democratic lawmakers promoted its answers. AP reported that while Trump was still speaking the site began saying it couldn't answer "political questions"; Newsweek reported consistent answers across its 15 prompts. The White House did not say whether Trump knew of the contradictions. It said the site will keep being updated and that the administration has been clear on the 2020 election and tariffs.

TechCrunch cautioned that chatbots hallucinate, and errors on benefits or taxes could mean missed deadlines or denied benefits.
