Trump touts Ohio gains for Husted and Ramaswamy at Youngstown rally; polls show tight races

After a Youngstown rally on 12 October, Trump said Jon Husted and Vivek Ramaswamy had gained ground in Ohio. Newsweek found the graphic he shared unsourced and the polling averages still favouring the Democrats, while Breitbart covered the rally and his attacks on Sherrod Brown and Amy Acton.

The story, neutrally told

Mixed · 2President Donald Trump held a midterm campaign rally at the Covelli Centre in Youngstown, Ohio, on the night of Monday 12 October, urging voters to back Republican Sen. Jon Husted and gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy. Right · 1Trump said that "Twenty-two days from now, Ohio is going to defeat Sherrod Brown and elect Jon Husted to the United States Senate," and called Ramaswamy "a very smart guy" and a "very good friend." Right · 1Breitbart reported that Trump was joined by YouTuber and boxer Jake Paul and football coach Jon Gruden, who introduced the president and spoke of Husted, his former University of Dayton teammate.

Right · 1At the rally Trump attacked Democrats on inflation, energy prices and the border, said Brown wants open borders and "men playing in women's sports," and called Ramaswamy's opponent Amy Acton, Ohio's health director in 2019-2020, "a total lunatic" who "shut down Ohio schools during COVID." Right · 1Trump also said Brown had requested a $750,000 earmark to fund drag queens reading to children; Breitbart added that Brown did request $750,000 for fiscal year 2024 for Harmony Project Productions, Inc., a Columbus-based group that had promoted a drag queen story time event, with the money intended to renovate a performance and community space. Centre · 1Separately, Trump posted on Truth Social, "Look what happened in Ohio since my last rally," sharing a chart he presented as showing Husted and Ramaswamy ahead after his 3 October rally in Vandalia.

Centre · 1According to Newsweek, the chart put Husted 2 points and Ramaswamy 1 point above an unspecified generic-ballot benchmark, not against Brown or Acton, and gave no source, pollster or methodology. Centre · 1A co/efficient poll of 925 likely voters on 5-6 October found Ramaswamy leading Acton 45% to 43% and Husted ahead of Brown 44% to 43%, both within its margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 points. Centre · 1Newsweek said RealClearPolitics averages still showed Democrats leading both races at the time of writing, so Trump's interpretation was broader than the evidence he presented.

Centre · 1Newsweek emailed the White House and the campaigns for comment; a Husted campaign spokeswoman had previously said it does not comment on public polling. Centre · 1The stakes include control of the Senate, where Republicans hold a 53-47 majority and Democrats need a net gain of four seats; Newsweek also described affordability and data-centre electricity costs as central issues in the Ohio contests.

Every sentence links to the reporting it rests on. The pill in front of each says where its sources sit: Left, Centre or Right when one side supplies at least half of them, Mixed when they are evenly split. The number is how many outlets it cites.
