The story, neutrally told

Mixed · 2Speaking at a rally in Youngstown, Ohio, President Donald Trump said Somaliland was "a totally different country" from Somalia, saying he called it "Somalia land, not Somaliland" and that "I think they should change the name immediately." Right · 1The Somaliland remark came in a passage about immigration: Trump warned that if Democrats regained control they would "immediately reopen our borders" and let in migrants from places such as Somalia, described Rep. Ilhan Omar as "a disaster", and said Democrats would raise taxes so that migrants could "pillage the state budget". Right · 1Breitbart noted that the comments followed an exclusive interview in which Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi called Trump "a great man" who "could make more history by recognizing a new country called Somaliland" that would cooperate against terrorism and piracy.

Right · 1Somaliland's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation issued a statement warmly welcoming what it called Trump's acknowledgement of Somaliland "as a distinct country", citing its own border, constitution, elected government and more than three decades of self-government, and saying it looked forward to deeper engagement with the Trump administration. Centre · 1In a post on X, Hargeisa said the remarks "underscore Somaliland's distinct identity and its separate political reality" and that it remained "steadfast in its pursuit of international recognition". Mixed · 2On Wednesday, hundreds of people gathered in Kheyriyadda Square in Hargeisa waving US and Somaliland flags, some bearing Trump's face; AFP said it could not independently verify the videos and images shared on social media.

Centre · 1Participants interviewed by AFP read the remarks as a sign of coming US recognition, though one student said he did not agree with everything Trump said, including the name suggestion; no US recognition has been announced in the coverage. Right · 1Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) wrote on X that "Somaliland is not Somalia" and that it is "well past time for the United States to formally recognize it." Mixed · 2Somaliland has so far been formally recognised only by Israel, which did so in late 2025. It has its own currency, passport and army and a strategic position on the Gulf of Aden, but the African Union and others strongly oppose secession for fear of encouraging breakaway movements; the US, UAE and Ethiopia have not followed Israel, and Mogadishu had not commented.
