The story, neutrally told

Centre · 2US President Donald Trump signalled further action against Iran at a campaign rally in Wasilla, Alaska, on Tuesday, saying: "Wait till you see what we do to Iran. We're going to do a number. We sort of had it." Centre · 1He was campaigning for Republican candidates ahead of the 3 November US midterm elections, and added that "the big thing is" that Iran would not have a nuclear weapon. Centre · 1Earlier, speaking outside the White House, Trump called Iran a "failed country" with a collapsing economy and said: "We'll make a decision on Iran very soon." At the Alaska event he said Iran's nuclear programme was "buried under thousands of tonnes of rock".

Centre · 2Axios reported on Tuesday, citing two US officials and other sources, that Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had discussed launching a major new operation against Iran ahead of elections in both countries, and that the talks took place before Trump publicly said he would not strike before the midterms. Israel holds a general election on 27 October. Centre · 1Axios also reported that the Pentagon has directed US Central Command to complete preparations for possible major combat operations. Trump said last week the US would not attack Iran before the midterms, citing progress in negotiations. Centre · 1The remarks came as shipping attacks rose around the Strait of Hormuz. UK Maritime Trade Operations said at least 12 vessels had been attacked in and around the strait in the past week, six of them on Sunday alone.

Centre · 1Reuters reported that two Iranian officials said Tehran was using new tactics against ships, with one saying they began about 10 days ago. A second official said Tehran would stop Washington lowering oil prices before the midterms. Centre · 1US Central Command rejected a claim by Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps that it controls the strait, saying US forces and regional partners "clearly control" it and had helped ship more than 19 million barrels of crude through it the day before. Centre · 1The conflict began with US and Israeli strikes across Iran on 28 February. Tehran has rejected Washington's latest response to its proposal to end it; Mohsen Rezaei, head of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, called it "insufficient" and warned of possible attacks on regional digital infrastructure if hostilities resume. The US maintains a naval blockade of Iranian ports and has expanded sanctions, and Qatari mediators await Tehran's reply to a US counterproposal.
