TSB says no further TSB or Santander UK branch closures before 2028 at the earliest

TSB chief executive Nicola Bannister has told customers no additional TSB or Santander UK branches will close before 2028 at the earliest. The two banks run 480 branches between them, and Santander's previously announced 58 closures in 2026 and 2027 still go ahead.

The story, neutrally told

Mixed · 2TSB and Santander have given customers an update on their branch networks, saying there will be no further closures before 2028. Right · 1In a message to customers, TSB Chief Executive Nicola Bannister said she was "pleased to confirm that we won't be closing any additional TSB or Santander UK branches before 2028, at the earliest". Right · 1Bannister said customers consistently tell her how much they value a local branch and the help from TSB's Money Confidence Experts, and that branches play an important role in supporting local communities with face-to-face support.

Mixed · 2TSB currently has 175 branches across the UK and Santander has 305, which together make the 480 branches in the headlines. Mixed · 2The pause does not cancel earlier plans: Santander confirmed earlier this year that it would close 58 branches in 2026 and 2027, and no further closures are due once those have shut. Mixed · 2A Santander UK spokesperson had earlier attributed the closures to "a continuing and sizeable shift towards customers using digital banking" and said the bank would keep investing in full-service, counter-free and reduced-hour branches, Santander Locals and Work Cafés, as well as digital banking.

Mixed · 2Both outlets place the announcement against wider closures: Lloyds Banking Group brands (Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland) are closing at least 247 branches across 2026 and 2027, and NatWest and RBS at least 49. Mixed · 2Both articles also say an unnamed bank will keep its remaining 336 branches open until at least 2029; the coverage does not make clear which bank this refers to.

Every sentence links to the reporting it rests on. The pill in front of each says where its sources sit: Left, Centre or Right when one side supplies at least half of them, Mixed when they are evenly split. The number is how many outlets it cites.
