The story, neutrally told

Centre · 1England manager Thomas Tuchel said the team has moved on from its World Cup semi-final disappointment and taken an important step forward with its Nations League performances. Centre · 1England lost 3-2 to world champions Spain in their Nations League opener. They then beat the Czech Republic home and away and won 7-0 against Croatia, scoring 14 goals in their opening four matches. Centre · 1Speaking after Tuesday's 3-0 win over the Czechs at Wembley, the 53-year-old Tuchel said: "I think it's necessary to move on." He noted that England did not go out in the group stage at the World Cup, and said the squad had built on that tournament rather than starting again.

Centre · 1Tuchel praised the players' commitment and attitude from the first day in camp, saying he was happy they had shown it in all four matches. England are targeting success at Euro 2028 on home soil. Centre · 2The World Cup loss was a 2-1 semi-final defeat by Argentina in Atlanta. Tuchel has continued to face questions about it, and BBC Sport's Phil McNulty wrote that he was heavily criticised for his defensive tactics in the game. Centre · 1In the Czech win, captain Harry Kane scored twice, equalled Peter Shilton's England record of 125 caps, and took his England goal total to 91, 38 ahead of Wayne Rooney.

Centre · 1McNulty singled out an attacking group of Kane, Anthony Gordon, Bukayo Saka and Jude Bellingham. Gordon scored in the games against Spain, the Czech Republic and Croatia, and Saka scored twice in Croatia. Centre · 1Trent Alexander-Arnold, left out of the World Cup squad, was recalled and made his first start under Tuchel against the Czechs in Prague. McNulty said his performances demand his continued inclusion. Centre · 1Bournemouth's Alex Scott impressed on his debut in the 7-0 win in Croatia but then suffered a thigh injury that Bournemouth fear will sideline him for two months. Newcastle's Lewis Hall also made a strong case at left-back after Nico O'Reilly returned to Manchester City injured.

Centre · 1Tuchel said Declan Rice, who was being rested as his load is managed after injury, remains a fixed point in his team but that "it's an ongoing competition" as other midfielders impress.
