The story, neutrally told

Two people were injured on Thursday 1 October when an explosive device attached to a car went off at a security checkpoint in the Jazrat al-Buhamid area of Deir ez-Zor province, eastern Syria. The Deir ez-Zor Media Directorate, citing the province's Internal Security Directorate, said a fire broke out in a car at the checkpoint after the explosion, and that the identities and conditions of the two injured were not immediately known. Syrian state news agency SANA quoted a security source as saying preliminary findings indicated an explosive device attached to the vehicle caused the blast.

Security units began collecting evidence to identify, pursue and arrest those involved; no suspect or group has been named. The incident followed a shooting on a bus on the Masyaf Bridge in Homs countryside on Wednesday that killed seven people and wounded four, for which attackers have not been identified. Arab News adds context: Syria has faced mounting security challenges since the fall of Bashar Assad's government in late 2024, and state media reported an explosion at a gas pipeline near a power plant outside Damascus shortly before the Homs attack, two days after reported sabotage of another pipeline in eastern Syria.
