The story, neutrally told

Mixed · 2Two people were killed in Kyiv in the early hours of Wednesday 7 October during a Russian attack on the Ukrainian capital. Centre · 1Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the two died in a fire in the densely populated Darnytskyi neighbourhood; two other people were rescued while the fire was being put out. Left · 1Klitschko also said buildings and warehouses across the city were damaged, according to the Independent, which relayed this from a news agency report.

Mixed · 2The attack followed a warning from President Volodymyr Zelensky, who said in a video message and nightly address that there was updated intelligence on Russian preparations for a massive strike. Mixed · 2Zelensky told people to respond to alerts and said Ukraine's forces were ready to respond as far as its defences allow; he added that much depends on partners, particularly the United States and Europe, having the political will to help. Mixed · 2The Independent said it was unclear whether Wednesday's attack was the "massive strike" Zelensky referred to, given that Moscow targets the capital almost daily; France 24 described the deaths as following what Zelensky called "massive strikes".

Mixed · 2Before the attack the Ukrainian air force warned that a ballistic missile was heading for Kyiv and that Tu-95 bombers were approaching the border, and scheduled power cuts darkened parts of the city to ease pressure on the grid. Mixed · 2Residents sheltered in metro stations, and France 24 quoted a bank worker, Iryna Rybalchenko, saying "The whole of Kyiv is in a state of fear." Mixed · 2Elsewhere, Ukraine's National Police said Russian drones killed two men and wounded scores in Sumy Oblast, including three children; an air strike damaged an industrial facility in Dnipro, according to governor Oleksandr Hanzha; and a ballistic missile warning was issued for Zaporizhzhia, where an attack damaged transport infrastructure.

Centre · 1France 24 said Russian strikes have increasingly targeted energy infrastructure, rail and road transport, including Kyiv's bridges, as winter approaches, and noted Klitschko's warning last week that the capital should be on a war footing. Left · 1The Independent's live coverage placed the attack in a wider context: Ukraine launched more than 650 drones at the Moscow region on Monday night, believed to be the largest such attack in two years, and the strikes coincided with Vladimir Putin's 74th birthday, for which Kim Jong Un sent a message of support, according to North Korean state media.
