The story, neutrally told

Ukrainian drones struck the Russian cities of Volgograd and Samara overnight on 2 October, according to Meduza. Volgograd region governor Andrey Bocharov said there had been a "massive drone attack on industrial infrastructure" without saying which facilities were targeted; he said a residential building caught fire and one person was hospitalised or injured. Meduza, citing the outlet Astra, reported eyewitness photos and videos showing a large fire near the Volgograd oil refinery and the Kaustik chemical plant, and said residents reported no drone alert was issued in Volgograd.

In Samara, Astra reported that an oil pipeline operations and dispatch facility caught fire; Meduza describes the Samara station as Europe's largest oil storage tank complex and part of Transneft's network. Authorities in Samara issued no official report of the fire, but Mayor Ivan Noskov said missile and drone alerts were issued, aboveground public transit stopped and the metro was used as a shelter. Russia's Defense Ministry said its air defences intercepted or destroyed 646 Ukrainian fixed-wing drones over several Russian regions, occupied Crimea and the Black Sea and Sea of Azov.

In Ukraine, a Russian drone hit a residential building in Kyiv's Darnytskyi district, killing one person and injuring two, according to Kyiv prosecutors; Mayor Vitali Klitschko said another attack targeted the Pivdennyi Bridge, which was closed to traffic. Russia's Defense Ministry said it struck Ukrainian port and energy infrastructure, a Kyiv Dnieper bridge, a substation near Nalyvaikivka, an industrial complex at Izmail port and a cargo ship in the Black Sea, describing them as supporting Ukraine's military; Ukraine's Air Force said Russia launched 108 attack drones, 88 of them shot down or suppressed. Anadolu noted that independent verification of the claims from both sides remains difficult.
