Unite urges Labour to keep Rough gas storage open, citing 450 jobs and energy security

Unite the Union has called on the Labour government to stop Centrica closing the Rough gas storage site off the Yorkshire coast, saying nationalisation should be an option. Ministers say the expansion is a commercial decision for Centrica.

The story, neutrally told

Right · 2Unite the Union has urged the Labour government to intervene to stop the closure of Rough, which both outlets describe as Britain's biggest gas storage facility, and to consider public ownership if no funding deal can be reached. Right · 1Rough is a depleted gas field converted for storage, 18 miles off the Yorkshire coast, and accounts for around half of UK gas storage capacity; its operator Centrica has said it will not seek to continue production beyond April 2027. Right · 2Unite said the closure would cost 100 direct jobs and affect 350 more in the supply chain, about 450 in total.

Right · 1General secretary Sharon Graham said the facility is essential to UK energy security and that "the general public will not forgive the government or Centrica" if it closes; Unite energy officer Simon Coop said the union would push to keep it open "at all costs", including public ownership. Right · 1Unite claimed Rough is currently empty because of the dispute and that the UK holds only 12 days of gas supply in storage, the lowest level in recent history; GB News reports this as Unite's claim, and the Daily Mail does not repeat it. Right · 2Centrica has a £2 billion redevelopment plan and wants a government-backed "cap and floor" mechanism guaranteeing a minimum return while capping the maximum; chief executive Chris O'Shea has said Rough's future is too important to be dismissed as simply a "commercial decision".

Right · 2Defence minister Luke Pollard rejected the appeal earlier this week, saying the decision is for the company and that Centrica is "a big company with deep pockets"; GB News adds that he said the government is not choosing to invest in Rough and is moving away from fossil fuels. Right · 1A Department for Energy Security and Net Zero spokesperson said UK gas supply is "diverse and highly resilient" and that storage was only 5 per cent of supply last winter. Right · 2Both outlets place the dispute against concern over winter gas supplies, with the Iran war cutting Middle East supply and raising competition for gas; GB News adds that European storage is also low and analysts warn of a year of high prices.

Every sentence links to the reporting it rests on. The pill in front of each says where its sources sit: Left, Centre or Right when one side supplies at least half of them, Mixed when they are evenly split. The number is how many outlets it cites.
