The story, neutrally told

Mixed · 2An uncrewed surface vessel has deployed with a US aircraft carrier strike group for the first time in the US Navy's history. Mixed · 2Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao disclosed it in a panel discussion at an Army conference in Washington on 14 October, saying: "This is the first carrier strike group to ever deploy with a large-size unmanned surface vessel, and this is a force multiplier. Imagine having more guns out there." Mixed · 2According to a person familiar with the ship, the vessel is a Leidos Inc. Seahawk, a 145-ton, 137-foot-long surface vessel designed to operate over extended distances for months, and it is sailing from the West Coast with the carrier and its escort vessels.

Mixed · 2Bloomberg, carried by The Straits Times, reported that the strike group left its San Diego home port in late September headed for the Middle East, while Anadolu quoted Cao as saying it "just deployed on Oct. 8"; Anadolu also quoted him describing the vessel as "medium-sized" before calling it "large-size". Right · 1Bloomberg reported that a US official said the group is heading to the Middle East to give commanders more options if President Donald Trump chooses to restart military strikes against Iran. Mixed · 2Cao also said US forces in the Middle East used a Corsair II autonomous vessel built by Saronic Technologies Inc. to recover two Apache helicopter pilots in the Strait of Hormuz, and that unmanned underwater vehicles were used to clear sea mines there.

Right · 1Bloomberg added that USS Roosevelt personnel operated the Seahawk during the 2026 Rim of the Pacific exercises near Hawaii, according to a Leidos release in September, and described the deployment as underscoring the Pentagon's growing reliance on uncrewed platforms.
