The story, neutrally told

The US military has sent two additional Patriot missile batteries to Saudi Arabia and Qatar to protect oil and gas facilities, Axios reported, citing two US officials and a regional source. According to Anadolu's account of the report, one battery went to Saudi Arabia last month to protect a key oil facility, and another went to Qatar to defend a natural gas facility. The deployments were meant to reassure both countries that their key energy infrastructure would be protected if major combat operations against Iran resume.

President Donald Trump said on Thursday he was considering renewing a bombing campaign in the coming weeks: "Now I have to make a decision: either Iran signs the deal, or it won't exist any longer." Axios reported that in early August Saudi and Qatari leaders urged Trump not to launch a major attack including strikes on Iranian energy infrastructure, fearing retaliation against their own facilities; US officials said this was a key reason he chose economic pressure instead. Washington would need Saudi permission to use the kingdom's airspace for renewed major combat operations, and Anadolu's account of the report says Riyadh would be unlikely to agree without assurances that its oil facilities were protected.

US Central Command spokesman Capt. Tim Hawkins declined to comment. The US is also sending more forces to the region: the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group left the US West Coast on Sunday, with arrival expected around mid-November according to Anadolu's account of Axios. Whether the Roosevelt replaces an existing carrier or raises the presence to three carrier strike groups has not been decided, a US official told Axios; US Naval Institute News reported it was relieving the USS Washington.

Anadolu says the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group with the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit left Monday and is due by the end of November, while the Jerusalem Post cites a US official describing a third carrier and a second Marine division en route, and notes the USS Boxer group with the 11th MEU is already in the Arabian Sea.
