The story, neutrally told

Initial US jobless claims fell to 197,000 in the week ending Sept. 26, the Labor Department said on Thursday. The previous week's figure was revised up by 1,000 to 198,000, and the four-week average fell by 2,500 to 200,000. Anadolu Agency reported the reading was below market expectations of 200,000, and the AP said it was the lowest level since mid-July.

Anadolu also reported that continuing claims fell by 11,000 to 1.701 million in the week ending Sept. 19, with the insured unemployment rate unchanged at 1.1%. The AP said claims have mostly stayed below 220,000 this year, which it described as historically low, and that layoffs remain low because businesses are reluctant to let staff go. Employers added 162,000 jobs in August, well above the 56,000 expected, and the unemployment rate held at 4.1%.

The AP said hiring has averaged 80,000 jobs a month this year, up from 9,700 in 2025, despite higher energy prices since fighting with Iran began Feb. 28. It said the September jobs report due next week is forecast to show 90,000 jobs added and unemployment at 4.1%.
