The story, neutrally told

Right · 1USC lost at Wisconsin on Saturday 24 October, its second loss of the 2026 season. The Trojans scored seven points, the fewest of any Lincoln Riley-coached team, according to Fox News's OutKick. Right · 1Before the game USC had beaten Penn State 31-23 on the road after an earlier home loss to Oregon. Ohio State had lost starting quarterback Julian Sayin, likely for the rest of the regular season, which made the Wisconsin game look like a step towards a big home game against the Buckeyes. Right · 1Fox News's OutKick says quarterback Jayden Maiava threw two interceptions, took intentional grounding penalties and finished with minus-57 rushing yards. It also says USC's running game totalled minus-17 yards, a field goal attempt was blocked, and Wisconsin passed for only 58 yards.

Right · 1The same outlet criticises Riley's decisions. It points to his choice not to call a timeout before a Wisconsin fourth-and-2 touchdown and to his attempt at a 59-yard field goal on fourth-and-17, which fell about 10 yards short. Right · 1After the game Riley said "You have to own it" and said this was the same team that played a different brand of football at Penn State two weeks earlier. Right · 1USC still has Ohio State, Indiana, Maryland and UCLA left. Fox News's OutKick says it is hard to see them winning more than two of those, and that the playoff path needs all four wins. Fox also reports a $70 million buyout that USC would owe Riley if it fired him.

Centre · 1Newsweek reports that USC is 6-2 and that Riley has not taken the program to the College Football Playoff in his first four years. It says rumours have spread that USC could move on from him or he could leave. Centre · 1At his Tuesday press conference Riley rejected those rumours. He said "This is the right place for me. I'm the right person to be here" and that he has had plenty of opportunities to leave. Centre · 1Newsweek notes that USC has never finished under .500 under Riley. It describes the next few weeks as potentially decisive, because three of the last four games are against top Big Ten sides, and says Indiana is ranked No. 4 and UCLA No. 7.

Every sentence links to the reporting it rests on. The pill in front of each says where its sources sit: Left, Centre or Right when one side supplies at least half of them, Mixed when they are evenly split. The number is how many outlets it cites.
