The story, neutrally told

Conrad “Cronos” Lant, co-founder and frontman of the British heavy metal band Venom, has died at the age of 63. The news was announced in a statement on Venom's official social media pages, and Variety also cited the Guardian. The band said that for more than four decades Lant's voice, bass and vision were at the heart of Venom, and that he was "uncompromising, fearless and unmistakable".

Venom extended condolences to his son Nathan, daughter Hel and friends, and Nathan thanked fans, known as the Legions, saying: "He has laid down his soul, and his music will live on." No cause of death has been given; the band's announcement did not include one, and the family and representatives have not disclosed further information. Lant was born in London and moved to Newcastle as a child. At 16 he joined a band called Guillotine, which became Venom; he moved from guitar to bass and then lead vocals.

Venom's first album, "Welcome to Hell" (1981), was made with guitarist Jeff "Mantas" Dunn and drummer Tony "Abaddon" Bray. Its album "Black Metal" gave a subgenre its name, and the band influenced thrash acts such as Metallica, Slayer and Anthrax. The 1985 album "Possessed" brought wider attention when it appeared at No. 14 on the Parents Music Resource Center's "Filthy 15" list. Venom went on hiatus in 1988 and Lant pursued a solo career as Cronos in the 1990s. The band later reformed for seven more albums, the latest being 2018's "Storm the Gates", and toured until this past summer. Lant also collaborated with Dave Grohl on the Probot project in 2004.

Fans paid tribute on social media, with some saying Venom's music changed their lives.
