The story, neutrally told

Mixed · 2The White House on Monday 5 October barred Politico from travelling on Air Force One, keeping it from its turn in the small out-of-town press pool that accompanies the president. Mixed · 2A Politico spokesperson confirmed the exclusion; CNN reported it first. President Donald Trump was due to travel to Nebraska for a campaign stop that afternoon. Mixed · 2The exclusion follows Trump's announcement on 18 September that he was banning Politico, CNN and MS NOW from the White House; he accused them of producing "fake news", and his post spoke of "FICTION and LIES".

Centre · 1The three outlets sued on 21 September, arguing the ban violates the First and Fifth Amendments. Mixed · 2US District Judge Timothy Kelly, a Trump nominee, issued a temporary restraining order around 1 a.m. on 24 September requiring the White House to reinstate the credentials and restore access to the grounds. The Independent notes it did not explicitly address pool participation. Left · 1In that ruling Kelly rejected the government's argument that the ban was motivated by national security, saying the record lacked factual support for it.

Mixed · 2Reporters were initially denied entry on 24 September but were let in around noon. The Washington Examiner says this followed ABC News suspending its pool coverage until CNN reporters were admitted. Mixed · 2CNN has since been barred from Air Force One on days it was assigned pool duty. Its lawyers said it was excluded from the Knoxville trip without official explanation, so no primary television pooler travelled. Mixed · 2Trump told Time that denying the outlets Air Force One was not a violation of the court order. Communications director Steven Cheung said restoring press passes is "different than allowing the pool into the events in the Oval Office or on Air Force One."

Mixed · 2The Justice Department says the outlets failed to meet "minimum requirements of professionalism", that access is a privilege rather than a right, and that there is "no basis" for full access to all areas of the White House. The Examiner adds that the administration cited publishing sensitive or classified information. Mixed · 2The outlets' lawyers say the White House's words and actions "leave little doubt" it will reinstate a complete ban if allowed, and that harms to the press will "quickly compound" without a preliminary injunction. Mixed · 2The restraining order expires Thursday 8 October, when Kelly will hold a hearing on whether to grant a preliminary injunction lasting through the litigation. The outlets have asked for the order to be extended.

Mixed · 2The Examiner also reports that on Monday Trump attacked the New York Times over its coverage of an Ohio rally and said outlets "should be arrested". The Independent said it had asked the White House for comment, and the Examiner said it had asked Politico and the White House.

Every sentence links to the reporting it rests on. The pill in front of each says where its sources sit: Left, Centre or Right when one side supplies at least half of them, Mixed when they are evenly split. The number is how many outlets it cites.
