The story, neutrally told

Right · 2The White House attacked Natalie Maines, lead singer of The Chicks, in a statement to Fox News Digital after she criticised President Donald Trump during a concert. Right · 2The statement said: "Natalie Maines is a despicable nobody who clearly suffers from a severe case of Trump Derangement Syndrome that has rotted her peanut-sized brain." Right · 2Maines made the remarks while opening The Chicks' anniversary tour for "Taking the Long Way" in New York with bandmates Emily Strayer and Martie Maguire.

Right · 2According to Billboard, she said she would "never" submit to the "shut up and sing" brigade, and joked: "Now I'd give George Bush a big wet kiss, 'cause now we're ashamed the president of the United States is from the United States." Right · 2The line echoes her 2003 remark, when the band was known as the Dixie Chicks, that they were "ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas" over the Iraq War; the group faced widespread scrutiny and was banned from country radio. Right · 1Fans reacted in mixed ways on Instagram: some complained about politics at a concert, including one who said they spent $1,500 on a ticket, while others praised the band for speaking up.

Right · 1Fox News reported that in May Maines posted a profanity-filled Instagram rant accusing Trump of destroying democracy, and that the White House gave the same statement then. Right · 1A representative for Maines had not responded to Fox News Digital's request for comment at the time of its report.
