The story, neutrally told

Left · 2A 44-year-old woman from El Salvador who went overboard from the Royal Caribbean cruise ship Odyssey of the Seas was rescued alive after about 20 hours in the water southwest of the Greek island of Zakynthos. Left · 2The incident happened early on Friday 9 October, while the ship was sailing in the Ionian Sea; the Greek coastguard said the woman told rescuers she had jumped because "she wanted to disembark". Left · 2After the alert, the coastguard launched a search involving patrol boats, a helicopter and nearby ships that were rerouted. The Independent lists a Hellenic Air Force Super Puma helicopter, while CBS, citing the coastguard via AFP, refers to two coastguard boats and a navy helicopter; CBS adds that the Odyssey of the Seas also joined the search.

Left · 2Early on Saturday 10 October a passing freighter found her conscious inside a life ring. The Independent names the vessel as the MSC ROSSELLA III, a cargo ship flying the Madeira flag, and says the flashing light on the flotation device was spotted first. Left · 1The Independent reports she was found about 70 nautical miles south-west of Zakynthos and roughly two nautical miles from where she entered the water. Left · 2A Greek coastguard vessel picked her up and she was taken to the port of Katakolo. A coastguard video shows a crew throwing a rope to a woman floating in an orange life ring in the dark.

Left · 2She was then taken to hospital in Pyrgos for observation. CBS says the tests include a psychiatric evaluation ordered by a local prosecutor. The Independent describes Pyrgos as a village on Santorini, which differs from CBS's description of it as a city near Katakolo. Left · 1The Independent says the Katakolo Port Authority is investigating the incident. Left · 2Both outlets place the case alongside earlier overboard incidents: the Independent cites James Michael Grimes (Carnival Valor, 2022, almost 20 hours in the Gulf of Mexico) and Kay Longstaff (Norwegian Star, 2018, about 10 hours in the Adriatic). CBS cites a man who allegedly jumped from a Royal Caribbean ship near San Juan last year to avoid more than $16,000 in gambling debt.

Every sentence links to the reporting it rests on. The pill in front of each says where its sources sit: Left, Centre or Right when one side supplies at least half of them, Mixed when they are evenly split. The number is how many outlets it cites.

Framing
Both outlets report it as a survival and rescue story built on Greek coastguard information, with the woman's stated reason for jumping and comparisons to other overboard cases.
Emphasis
The Independent stresses the rescue detail (vessel names, distance, flashing light); CBS stresses the coastguard account, the video and the psychiatric evaluation ordered by a prosecutor.
Leaves out or plays down
CBS omits the freighter's name, the distance from Zakynthos and the port authority investigation; the Independent omits the psychiatric evaluation and the coastguard video.
