The story, neutrally told

Women in Film (WIF) has named Pamela Abdy, Adria Arjona, Beth de Araújo, Gemma Chan and Salma Hayek Pinault as honorees for this year's WIF Honors. The event takes place on Nov. 5 at the Beverly Hilton; it is WIF's largest fundraiser of the year and, per Variety, directly funds its advocacy, research and career programs. Abdy, co-chair and CEO of Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group, will receive the inaugural Vanguard Award from Nancy Meyers, who is working on a new Warner Bros. film; Variety says the studio backed Meyers' first film in more than a decade, a comedy due on Christmas Day 2027.

Variety notes Abdy's tenure has included "One Battle After Another," "Sinners," "Barbie," "Weapons" and "Dune: Part Two," and that Warner Bros. tied the studio record with 11 Academy Awards last year. Jane Fonda will present Hayek Pinault with the Jane Fonda Humanitarian Award, recognizing her film and television career and her advocacy for the rights of women, children and immigrants. Arjona receives the WIF Max Mara Face of the Future Award for her rising-star status, while de Araújo and Chan receive the Crystal Award for Advocacy in Film for their collaboration on "Josephine," which Variety says won the U.S. Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award at Sundance and opens in limited release on Nov. 20.

WIF CEO Kirsten Schaffer said the honorees exemplify the organization's values, citing its Reframe research showing a "sobering backslide" for women and nonbinary people in the industry. Honors co-chairs Victoria Alonso and Andrea Nelson Meigs singled out Abdy's advocacy for storytellers and said Arjona, Hayek, Chan and de Araújo are women of color in an industry where they remain underrepresented.
