The story, neutrally told

Centre · 1Xreal launched the Xreal Aura wired smart glasses at Google's Android Developer Summit on Wednesday 28 October 2026. They run on Android XR and Qualcomm's Snapdragon Reality Elite platform, and the companies had teased them at Google I/O earlier in the year. Mixed · 2The glasses are tethered to a smartphone-like compute puck that does the processing. They weigh 95 grams, and a computer or handheld game console can be plugged into the puck by USB-C to mirror its screen to the glasses. Centre · 1The 12GB + 256GB model is listed at $1,279, with a limited launch price of $1,099 through December. The 16GB + 512GB model is $1,499, with a launch price of $1,299 through December. Orders opened on the day of the announcement, and Xreal said shipping begins in mid-November.

Left · 1The Verge reports the $1,099 price as a cut from the $1,279 Xreal charged for early preorders last month. It suggests the cut is because $1,279 would have put the Aura in direct competition with Meta's VR Glasses. Xreal general manager and spokesperson Ralph Jodice told The Verge that customers who preordered at the original price will automatically be refunded the difference. Mixed · 2The outlets differ on availability. TechCrunch says orders open in the US, Canada, Japan and South Korea. The Verge says sales start now in the US, Canada and South Korea, with Japan on 2 November and broader availability next year. Mixed · 2The display uses a Sony Micro-OLED panel at 1200p and 120Hz. TechCrunch gives a 95-degree field of view, which it says puts the glasses above the Ray-Ban Meta Display on paper, though they are heavier than Meta's 69 grams. The Verge puts the field of view at 70 degrees diagonal, calling it one of the widest for transparent glasses but not huge.

Mixed · 2Launch software includes Google Play apps and games plus XR titles such as NBA App for Android XR, Nevatars, Fallout: Factions, Project Hail Mary: Journey Among the Stars, NASCAR XR App and San Francisco Ballet's The Nutcracker. The Verge says there will be over 150 made-for-XR experiences. Gemini is available as an assistant that can answer questions about what the wearer is seeing, and audio uses Bose technology. Left · 1Xreal is also partnering with GameSir on a wireless gamepad with a dedicated Gemini key and is announcing a folding portable wireless keyboard. Price and release details for both have not been given. Google also said Google Photos will get a spatial gallery this year. Centre · 1TechCrunch places the launch in the wider competition over smart glasses, with Google relying on partners such as Samsung and Xreal while Meta expands. It recalls that Xreal CEO Chi Xu told it in May that building a smart glasses business is hard and that everyone is losing money.
