The story, neutrally told

Centre · 1Yemen's government urged the UN Security Council on Friday 9 October to take decisive action against the Houthis, accusing the group of escalating attacks, recruiting children and displacing civilians. Centre · 1Yemen's permanent representative, Abdullah Ali Fadhel Al-Saadi, cited Yemeni government figures saying more than 100 children died in September alone, and said recent attacks had pushed the number of internally displaced people above 200,000, with about 3,000 people fleeing to Djibouti. Centre · 1Al-Saadi asked the council for a "clear decision" holding the Houthis responsible and enforcing existing resolutions, along with measures to restrict funding, smuggling networks and transfers of weapons, technology and expertise. He also accused Iran of backing the group.

Centre · 1Saudi Arabia's permanent representative, Abdulaziz Alwasil, also told the council that it must address the "continued escalation by the terrorist Houthi militias". He cited attacks on civilians and on civilian and vital infrastructure in Saudi Arabia, and warned of risks to the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, international trade and supply chains. Right · 1According to Arab News, Alwasil said Saudi Arabia would not allow Yemen to become a staging ground for threats to the Kingdom or to Red Sea navigation, and reaffirmed its right to defend its territory while remaining committed to a political solution. Right · 1Arab News reported that his remarks followed two attacks on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh that killed three Saudi nationals, including Saudia pilot Capt. Hamoud Ali Alkalthami. It also reported Houthi missile and drone attacks on Riyadh, Abha, Khamis Mushait, Jazan and Najran, a Sept. 15 attempt to target Makkah and a Sept. 29 attack on the Taiba electricity station in Madinah.

Right · 1Alwasil said the Houthis receive external military and technical support, and asked the council to enforce relevant resolutions, including the arms embargo on the Houthis and freedom of navigation in the Red Sea. He also accused them of forcibly displacing civilians, using starvation as a weapon and recruiting children. Mixed · 2Both envoys backed a political settlement preserving Yemen's sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity. Al-Saadi praised Saudi Arabia's solidarity, and Alwasil cited Saudi economic support to Yemen above $12.6 billion between 2012 and 2026, plus more than $4.5 billion in humanitarian aid. Right · 1The meeting came amid renewed fighting in Yemen, where Arab News says Houthi forces have advanced along parts of the Red Sea coast and Saudi-backed government forces have launched counteroffensives. The coverage includes no Houthi response.
