The story, neutrally told

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Thursday 1 October 2026 that the FP-7 tactical ballistic missile had been used in combat for the first time. In a Telegram statement he wrote: "Ukrainian tactical ballistic missile. FP-7. First combat use. Thank you for the result. Next -- production." Anadolu said the post came with a video. Zelensky gave no details on where the missile was used or what it targeted.

The FP-7 was developed by Ukrainian defence company Fire Point, which said earlier this month that the missile had completed two of three testing stages and could enter combat use within weeks. Public reports and Ukrainian military analysts describe it as a short-range, ground-launched missile with a range of about 200 km (124-125 miles); Anadolu also cites a stated maximum speed of about 1,500 metres per second. Reuters adds that Fire Point says the missile is being developed as a ballistic interceptor within the European Freyja missile defence programme launched this year, and that Davyd Aloian, deputy secretary of Ukraine's National Security and Defence Council, said in July Ukraine wants a Freyja prototype ready in the first half of next year.

Reuters also notes context: Russia frequently uses ballistic missiles against Ukrainian targets, Ukraine sees its own tactical ballistic missiles as important to its defence needs, and Zelensky had praised earlier test results this year as showing good potential for military use.
