The story, neutrally told

Tennessee is scheduled to execute Christa Pike, 50, by lethal injection on Wednesday 30 September at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville. It would be the state's first execution of a woman since 1820, according to the Death Penalty Information Center. Gov. Bill Lee denied her clemency request on Monday, and the US Supreme Court declined to halt the execution on Tuesday.

Pike was 18 in 1995 when she, her boyfriend Tadaryl Shipp and a third student lured classmate Colleen Slemmer, 19, to a wooded area and killed her; prosecutors say Pike saw Slemmer as a romantic rival. A pentagram was carved into the victim's chest; Shipp has admitted carving it, and the BBC reports Pike denies doing so herself. Shipp, 17 at the time, received life with the possibility of parole (Just the News says without parole), and the third participant received probation.

Pike's lawyers cite childhood sexual abuse, bipolar disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder, and say an 18-year-old brain is not an adult brain; they call her a remorseful 50-year-old. Her lawyers also challenged lethal injection, arguing it could retraumatise her; the state disputes their claim about difficult veins, and a judge rejected hanging but allowed for an all-female execution team. Pike has refused a last meal, according to the Tennessee Department of Correction, and told The Times she feels a 'kinship' with Lindsay Clancy.

Slemmer's mother, May Martinez, supports the execution, and UN human rights experts have called for commutation; 18 women have been executed in the US since 1976.
